Research Collaboration between Pennsylvania Pain & Spine Institute and Medical Student, Kevin Huang
Pennsylvania Pain and Spine Institute oversees and collaborates on research throughout the year with the Medical Students that are on rotation at our practice.
The latest research was focused on a Spinal Cord Stimulation technique developed by Robert Kelly, D.O. and how it was used in implantation on a patient with Scoliosis. The project was conducted by medical student, Kevin Huang in partnership with Dr. Robert Kelly.
Kevin Huang is a medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, and was on rotation with PA Pain and Spine to learn more about interventional pain medicine, the procedures/treatments performed, and to be involved with the patient care.
He presented this research at the American Academy of Physiatry (AAP) in February 2024.
The research demonstrates a specific case of a 65 year old patient at Pennsylvania Pain and Spine Institute with a history of CRPS and Scoliosis. The case covered specific considerations of the new technique in placement of the Spinal Cord Stimulator in a patient with complications such as Scoliosis, highlighting three theories that may contribute to the patient’s ease with (SCS) lead placement.
An overview of the findings conclude that in patients with chronic back and spinal complications, such as scoliosis or hyperkyphosis/hyperlordosis, deep inhalation during SCS lead insertion can facilitate SCS lead placement in the thoracic region, reduce procedural pain and therefore expedite the procedure.
If you would like to learn more about the Spinal Cord Stimulator procedure, or about the findings of this research & previous cases, schedule a consultation with one of our physicians to discuss.
